Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Plastic Surgery
How long do breast implants last?
The duration of breast implants is variable, and they do not have a defined lifespan for all patients. Modern implants are durable, but may require replacement in the future due to capsular contracture, rupture or other complications, or simply because of the patient’s desire to change the size or type of implant. Regular follow-up with the plastic surgeon is recommended to evaluate the condition of the implants.
What is the recovery time after augmentation mammoplasty?
The initial recovery time after augmentation mammoplasty is usually one week, during which relative rest and avoidance of heavy lifting is recommended. Swelling and bruising will gradually decrease over the following weeks. Full recovery for more strenuous activities may take 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the patient and the extent of the surgery.
Are there visible scars after breast reduction?
Yes, breast reduction will inevitably leave scars. However, the plastic surgeon will strive to make them as inconspicuous as possible by strategically placing them. Incision patterns vary (e.g., around the areola, vertical to the breast crease, and along the crease). Over time, scars tend to fade, although this varies from person to person. Indications on scar care will be provided to optimize the appearance of the scars.
When can I resume physical activity after breast surgery?
Generally, it is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 4 to 6 weeks after breast surgery. Gentle walking can be done shortly after surgery. The exact time to resume specific activities will depend on the type of procedure performed, individual recovery, and Dr. Morfa’s instructions.
